SHANGHAI, China, July 13, 2018 – PPG (NYSE:PPG) recently announced that it has become a featured provider of coatings and unique car colors for new-energy vehicles (NEV) manufactured by China’s leading automobile manufacturers, including SAIC General Motors, BYD, Weltmeister and Yudo Auto. NEVs featuring PPG coatings were introduced at the recent Auto China 2018.
The China NEV market has experienced rapid development and growth due to favorable government policies and growing customer demand for energy conservation and emissions reduction. Traditional and emerging Chinese carmakers are capitalizing on the opportunities to launch new NEV models.
For the new BUICK ENSPIRE
® all-electric concept SUV, PPG China color experts partnered with SAIC General Motors designers at the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center to develop the vehicle’s unique Shanghai Red color. The coating integrates PPG ANDARO
® special effects pigments with Tri-coat color technology to enhance color intensity and saturation, provide a sparkle reflection and highlight the crystal gloss of the vehicle’s body.
PPG and Weltmeister are working closely to customize the entire color series for the automaker’s first NEV model, the EX5™ mid-size full-electric SUV. PPG ZIRCOBOND
® thin-film pretreatment technology enables the automaker to reduce water consumption significantly, while PPG’s B1:B2™ Compact Paint System helps lower emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) while maintaining coating properties and vehicle appearance. Both coatings technologies help Weltmeister meet environmental protection requirements.
PPG is working with BYD to provide an extreme metallic blue effect using a tinted clear-coating system for the SONG MAX™ hybrid crossover and white colors for the YUAN™ subcompact crossover. The coatings company is creating an entire series of colors for Yudo Auto’s NEV.

In addition to exterior NEV coatings and colors, PPG researchers are developing coatings, adhesives, sealants and related products to protect and facilitate the use of batteries in electric vehicles. These include sealants that can help keep water from entering the battery compartments, electro-deposition (ED) coatings that can prevent degradation in the battery infrastructure and heat-dissipating coatings that will help solve issues related to thermal stress.
